The Linder Gallery at Keystone College will present an exhibition of sculptures and drawings by Cortland, N.Y. artist and professor Vaughn Randall through December 2 on the college’s campus in La Plume.
The exhibit is entitled “The Pros & Cons of Unitized Construction.” Mr. Randall’s large, machine-like sculptures suggest some type of futuristic technology, but he creates his work through the very traditional method of casting iron and bronze. The forms and motifs that make up his sculptures are adopted from earlier eras. His drawings, which are large works on plywood panels, also explore motifs from the pre-industrial world. “Vaughn Randall’s artwork evokes a very contemporary anguish,” said Drake Gómez, director of the Linder Gallery. “His sculptures are like machines in search of a purpose. I think of them as expressing a kind of mechanistic existentialism. And there’s a little of the ‘Steampunk’ aesthetic in his work, which I think many people will recognize.”
Mr. Randall is a professor of art at the State University of New York in Cortland. Previously, he served as art director and artist in residence at the Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark in Birmingham, Ala.
